Storyelf - VR storytelling

"Storyelf - An Adventure with Tina" is a project done in the VR Storytelling Collaboration Studio at Parsons Design and Technology. The studio is a design education interdisciplinary partnership between Parsons MFADT and middle school students at the Learning Community Charter School, Jersey City, NJ.

This project was done in collaboration with classmates Jeana Chesnik, Sisi Ma and LCCS student Ella Johnson-Lopez, with Professor Anezka Sebek and Tammy Walters.

Designing With Middle School Students

Our team of three Parsons Students - Jeana Chesnik, Kris Li, and Sisi Ma - was paired with fifth grade student Ella Johnson-Lopez. Starting with Ella's story which she has been developing for three weeks, we worked collaboratively to form the story into an interactive experience. It was essential that our team and Ella are equally important in the creative process. Every week, out team goes to the LCCS school to meet with Ella. Beside creating the story, we also made sure to include Ella in the process of building the game environment. As a prototyping tool, we worked in the GooCreate environment to help Ella visualize 3D scene building.

Our story narrative is composed of three main sections: 1) Animated introduction, 2) VR game experience and 3) animated ending.

Game Play-test

Our VR story showed at Parsons Playtech - an interactive showcase of game design by Parsons MFADT students; and a second time at the Learning Community Charter School. We were able to user-test with students ranging from the age of 7 - 12, as well as friends, family, Parsons faculty, outside educators and VR experts.
